How it all began…
When the retail park in Bad Sobernheim town center was rebuilt a few years ago, attention was drawn to a forgotten treasure in the immediate vicinity of the new parking lot. Hidden behind meters of ivy on an abandoned company site was a 600-year-old monastery chapel in a Sleeping Beauty slumber.
Since its time of use by Cistercian monks from the Disibodenberg monastery, the deconsecrated chapel had been used as a warehouse, a drying room for tobacco plants, and a secret meeting place for lovers. Thus, it was preserved for posterity, albeit in a regrettable condition.
Bruno Schneider, a passionate building contractor and monument conservationist, recognized the architectural potential of this gem. As a great beer lover, he seized the opportunity to establish a small brewery in his home town. After the great brewery decline in the 1970s and 1980s, small, local breweries found it increasingly difficult to compete with the beers advertised on television. So he decided to team up with two business partners to found a craft beer brewery that emphasizes traditional craftsmanship and tradition, but is also hip and creative. 2018 saw the birth of the “Brauerei im Denkmal” (Brewery in a Monument), the DENKMALz.
